Belzona® Seals Corroded Sewage Pipe At Busy Police Headquarters

Industry:

Buildings & Structures (BSTR)

Application:

Valves, Pipes and Fittings (VPF)

Customer Location:

Police Headquarters, Bedfordshire UK

Application Date:

March 2013

Application Situation:

A 4” cast iron sewage pipe behind toilets on the 3rd floor started leaking at the point where 4 x pipes connect, causing water damage to the toilet blocks on both floor levels below.

Problem:

The customer had tried to cure the leak by wrapping a type of adhesive tape around the corroded area. When this failed they contacted Belzona for a fast, cost effective, permanent and quiet solution.

Products:

Belzona 1291 (ES Metal)

Belzona 1161 (Super UW Metal)

Substrate:

Cast Iron

Application Method:

Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know How System Leaflet VPF-11. After removing the adhesive tape installed by the customer, the corroded and leaking area was cleaned down and then abraded using MBX Bristle Blaster to create a profile, which created a larger hole. This enlarged hole was gradually filled with Belzona 1291 until sealed and then wrapped over with Belzona 1161 incorporating Belzona 9341 (Reinforcing Tape).

Belzona Facts:

The customer had been quoted £4000-£4500 for the corroded “cross connector” to be cut out using a grinder (which would be very noisy, time consuming and difficult) and a new part installed. For this expensive solution the toilet blocks on all 4 floor levels would need to be closed for 4-5 days.  Instead, approx. £120 of Belzona materials were used, the repair took 2 hours and all the toilet blocks were back in service within 4 hours of being closed.
