KHIA ID: 5843
Industry: Power (POWR)
Application: VPF-Valves, Pipes and Fittings (VPF)
Substrate: Cast iron
Customer Location: Power Plant, Missouri, USA
Application Date: Late Summer 2015

Belzona 1291 (ES-Metal)

Belzona 1212

Problem: For the repair, the customer required minimum downtime and could only reduce the pressure to a minimum 5 PSI. Due to the location and saturation of water on the pump, surface preparation would be hard to achieve.
Photograph Descriptions
  1. View of pump operating at 200 psi visible on the gauge.
  2. Actual leak.
  3. Valves were shut off and leak was slowed down to complete the repair.
  4. Completed repair and in service with Belzona 1291 and Belzona 1212. The pump was slowly brought back up to full pressure to assure the leak was fixed.
Application Situation
The customer had a 200 psi high pressure raw water pump casing that was leaking. This pump could only be out of service for a small amount of time.
Application Method
The surface preparation was carried out with a scraper to remove the layers of paint. Then, a coarse file was used to etch around the hole and an MBX bristle blaster was used to prepare the surface. Bonding a plate was not an option due to the location of the hole being below where the casing was bolted together. Belzona 1291 was used to stop the active leak and Belzona 1212 was used to add thickness back to the pump casing that was saturated with water.
Belzona Facts
The pump could not be out of service for a long amount of time as this is the power plant's peak season. Replacement of the pump would have taken a week. This repair was done in an hour and the pump was put back in service with the leak completely sealed. Belzona has sealed many active leaks at this power plant and due to a previous leak repair that has been in service for 5 years, Belzona was called once again for this emergency.
