Problem: The pipes needed to be repaired and put back in service in a 48 hour window at air temperatures no higher that 50°F. The pipes were operating at 1,000 psi and 200°F. As there were no threaded connections, the only choice was shutting down the process, employing hot work to cut and replacing the defective pipe section. The customer was looking for a more attractive solution.
Photograph Descriptions
  1. Original condition. Significant exterior corrosion causing wall loss.
  2. After abrasive blasting shows several holes.
  3. Post curing composite wrap with heat tape.
  4. Completed application.
Application Situation
Customer had two ethyl glycol lines needing repair. The pipes were located near the waterline and access was difficult. One pipe had several through-wall defective areas whereas the other had thin-wall defects.
Application Method
Belzona 1511 was used to fill pits and rebuild the wall thickness lost. 5 layers of Belzona 9381 wetted with Belzona 4981 were applied with 50% overlap. Belzona 9382 was used to consolidate the repair. The system was allowed to cure at ambient temperature for 24 hours, then post cured at 200°F for 6 hours.
Belzona Facts
The customer saved time and money with the Belzona solution, and most importantly, did not have to shut down the line process.
