Belzona® Eliminates Breaches In Blast Furnace

General Industry (GIND)

Mechanical Power Transmission (MPT)

Customer Location:

Steel Manufacturer, Teesside, UK

Application Date:

October 2009

Application Situation:

Shaft for the Flow Control Gate into the blast furnace.

Abrasive dust and gases from the blast furnace had bypassed packings and seals around the shaft for the flow control gate at the top of the blast furnace. Damage had rapidly escalated, creating several grooved rings and severely gouged pits up to 15mm deep, allowing gases to escape, creating a potentially toxic area.

Belzona® 1111 (Super Metal)

Carbon Steel

Application Method:

Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet MPT-2.

Belzona Facts:

The contractor completed the work throughout the night and under a tight schedule. 9Kg of Belzona® 1111 was used with a purpose built clamp to recreate the original shaft profile of 280mm diameter. The preparation and application took only 2.5 hours, followed by a 5 hour cure period using heating pads to accelerate the cure. The blast furnace was returned to service with minimum downtime and to the complete satisfaction of the client.
