Belzona® Protects River Barrage 12 Years On

Marine (MRNE)

Centrifugal Pumps (CEP)

Customer Location:

British Waterways, Teesside, UK

Application Date:

Trial September 1997. Full scale application May 1999

Application Situation:

Flood defence barrage on tidal river.

The Tees Barrage was opened in 1995 with a designed life of 120 years. However, the client quickly found the rubber seals on moving gates were being damaged by the concrete walls when the barrage gates were raised and lowered. Trials were conducted for potential solutions in 1997 and only the Belzona application proved itself in practice.

Belzona® 4911 (Magma TX Conditioner)

Belzona® 1341 (Supermetalglide)

Application Method:

Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet CEP-10.

Belzona Facts:

The full scale application only proceeded once the initial trial had proven successful. A competitor's system had also been tried but wasn't able to be applied successfully. 4 gates each had 2 arcs of Belzona® 1341 applied, totalling about 400m². To date, the application is over 12 years old and, although each gate undergoes annual inspection, there has been no sign of any breakdown in any of these areas.
