Problem: Oil was leaking from many of the flanges. Replacing the seals was not an option. This would have required draining the 42 tonnes of oil from the transformer as well as individually dismantling the 70 flange faces, a very time-consuming task.

Application Situation
70 Flange faces of one of the transformers. Large transformer with no fewer than 70 flanged joints.
Application Method
Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet VPF-11a.. After the surface was prepared using an MBX Bristle Blaster followed by degreasing the substrate, Belzona® 1161 and Belzona® 9341 (Reinforcement tape) were applied onto the whole surface of the flange faces in order to stem the leaks.
Belzona Facts
Belzona offered a cost-effective solution to the client to cold-seal the leaking flange faces without the need to drain down the oil. The application only took two weeks to complete, far less than the alternative of replacing the seals, and allowed a quick return in service of the transformer.
