Problem: Most of the gasket had failed around the 10m perimeter of the lid, with oil seeping down the sides and going to ground. Unfortunately it was not possible to drain the oil below the gasket level and so the application had to be pursued as a live leak with a 1m head pressure.

Application Situation

Lid gasket failure resulted in extensive oil leaks around flange on this 66-11Kv transformer.

Application Method

Application was carried using Belzona Know-How System Leaflet VPF-11a as a guide. Area of flange and bolts were pressure cleaned and grit blasted. Live leaks stemmed with Belzona 1291 (ES Metal) and Belzona 1221 (Super E Metal). Bolt heads top and bottom were encapsulated with Belzona 1161 (Super UW Metal). Belzona 1161 (UW Metal) and Belzona 9341 (Reinforcement Sheet) were used to create a reinforced band around the flange. Finally over coated with Belzona 5831 (ST Barrier).

Belzona Facts

The customer was desperate for a fast solution to the problem and whilst there were a couple of very minor leaks still on completion, these were deemed to be well within acceptable limits. The customer was delighted with the results and is looking to repeat the application to other transformers on their site.
