Belzona® Seals Flour Silo With Plate Bonding Repair

Food & Drink (FOOD)

Tanks and Chemical Containment Areas (TCC)

Customer Location:

Flour mill, Glasgow, UK

Application Date:

February 2014

Application Situation:

A flour silo was experiencing corrosion issues due to water being held on the outside of the wall. A through wall defect had developed a few meters from the base of the silo.

The outside of the silo was completley inaccesable. Due to the environment (Atex 10), hot works were restricted. Any patch would also create a ledge where flour would be held - this can lead to unacceptable hygiene issues in this industry.

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
Belzona 1341 (Supermetalglide)

Mild steel

Application Method:

Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflets TCC-1 and TCC-5. The area was first prepared using a pnuematic MBX Bristle Blaster to give a surface profile. Pre fabricated plates were then bonded in place with belzona 1111. The top edge and sides were 'chamfered' with the product to give as smooth as possible finish to the plates. The entire area was then overcoated with Belzona 1341. This was to further prevent any hang-up of flour over the repair area.

Belzona Facts:

Cutting & welding was not an option due to the hot works involved. The only viable option to the client was the Belzona repair - saving the client weeks of downtime in the process.
