BELZONA REPAIRS CORRODED TANKS

KHIA ID: 5168
Industry: Mining & Quarrying (MINQ)
Application: TCC-Tanks and Chemical Containment Areas (TCC)
Substrate: Mild Steel
Customer Location: Aggregate Manufacturer, Chelmsford
Application Date: July 2014
Products:

Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)

Problem: The tanks have a sensor on top for flow and level readings. They sit on an upstand with a bolted flange. The upstands had been eaten away by the corrosive fumes from the hot bitumen. They were holed through and the gases from the tanks were venting to the atmosphere.

Application Situation
Storage tanks for molten bitumen
Application Method
The repairs were carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflet TCC-1. After preparing the corroded substrate, bridging tape was applied to spanthe holes so that product did not fall into the tanks. Three 4mm steel plates were bonded around each upstand before overwrapping with further Belzona incorporating Reinforcement tape.
Belzona Facts
It was not possible to carry out any welding due to the explosion risk. Belzona offered the required level of heat and chemical resistance to the corrosive fumes. The only other option was to replace all the tank lids but this would have incurred a tremendous cost.
