Industry:

Power (POWR)

Application:

Valves, Pipes and Fittings (VPF)

Customer Location:

Hydropower, Northeastern USA

Application Date:

2007

Application Situation:

Steelwork of 10 foot diameter penstocks in a Hydropower plant.

Problem:

100 plus year old steelwork was corroding from moisture. The problem was detected when installing new control valves and trash racks on penstocks.

Products:

Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal)

Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade)

Substrate:

Carbon steel

Application Method:

The surface was properly prepared by abrasive blasting. First, the pits and holes were repaired with Belzona 1121 and then overcoated with Belzona 5811.

Belzona Facts:

The plant was originally built in 1908 and the original steelwork showed significant exterior corrosion, thus operators feared that it would soon have pinholes. The plant was shut down for control upgrades so operators chose Belzona because of its reputation in similar situations.
