KHIA ID: 6377
Industry: Oil & Gas (OILG)

Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: Gulf of Mexico, USA
Application Date: November 2016
Products:

Belzona 9611

Belzona 1161

Problem: All spilled fluids on the offshore platform drain to this lowest point. The sump was a last defense and served as a gravity separator in case any oil is spilled on the platform deck. If there were oil in the bottom of this sump, it would spill into the Gulf of Mexico. Fortunately, there was no oil in the sump as it had been skimmed off prior to blasting operations.
Photograph Descriptions

1. Blistered and corroding sump pile.

2. Through wall defect discovered during blasting operations.

3. Defective area plugged with wood and Belzona 9611 to reduce leak.

4. Cold plate bonding repair with Belzona 1161.

Application Situation
The customer had a blasting and painting contractor on board to carry out routine work. While abrasive blasting a sump, a large through wall defect was discovered.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know How System Leaflet FBC-6 for sealing leaks. First, Belzona 9611 was used to plug over a wooden shim that reduced the leak to a weep. Secondly, Belzona 1161 was used to cold bond a 4"x4" steel plate onto the substrate and seal the leak completely. Belzona 1161 was further used to chamfer around the plate.
Belzona Facts
Both the contractor and asset owner were fortunate to have Belzona products for this application, already on board. A small amount of Belzona product was enough to contain a 40' x 36" column of water.
