Problem: Maintenance staff was having to caulk expansion joints every few months and it was still creating a hazard. Every time a sharp heel landed along the joint it would push the material further down and create a tripping hazard.

Application Situation
Expansion joint material wasn't holding up to constant foot traffic and was creating a tripping hazard.
Application Method
Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflet FPA-6. Old caulk and filler material was removed and the joint edges were ground with a masonry disc to insure a bond to firm substrate. Loose material was cleaned away and a solvent wipe was used to remove dust. The edges of the joint were taped with gaffers tape to insure materials did not extend beyond the intended area of application. Backer rod was inserted into the gap and set at depth of 1/4". Belzona 2911 was used to condition the edges of the expansion joint. After allowing the Belzona 2911 to dry, Belzona 2211 was troweled into the joint, taking care to insure good contact at the edges of the joint. The joint was then allowed to cure before foot traffic was allowed to return to the surface. The joint application was split into two parts to allow pedestrian traffic to use one lane of the bridge during cure.
Belzona Facts
The cost of repeated applications and potential injury due to the tripping hazard had the customer looking for a better solution. While the Belzona materials were more expensive than the caulk they had been using, the added safety and longevity made it a worthwhile investment for the customer. Similar Belzona applications have demonstrated over 30 years of service life after a single application and are still going strong.
