KHIA ID: 7541
Industry: Power (POWR)
Application: SHM-Solids Handling Machinery (SHM)
Substrate: Stainless steel
Customer Location: Biomass plant, Scotland
Application Date: November 2012
Products:

Belzona 1812 (Ceramic Carbide FP)

Problem: The constant abrasion from wood chippings over the screw surface was found to damage the screw heavily. The shaft and flights would wear out within a few months of operation, and the entire unit would need replacement after just over 1 year.

Application Situation
A large screw conveyor transporting wood chippings to the top of a CHP furnace. The constant feed of chippings is critical to the plant's operation.
Application Method
Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona system leaflet SHM-14. Grit blasting was used to prepare the surface, followed by a lining of Belzona 1812.
Belzona Facts
Hard facing was considered but found to be too time consuming and expensive. The Belzona solution was provided for a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the time of the alterniative solutions. In 2018, the client reported that not only is the screw conveyor still performing but it has been working twice as hard over the 3 years in service, with no loss of performance.
