BELZONA REPAIRS A HEAVILY DAMAGED MARINE FENDER

KHIA ID: 7723
Industry: Marine (MRNE)
Application: SOS-Ships and Offshore Structures (SOS)
Substrate: Rubber
Customer Location: Washington, USA
Application Date: June 2018
Products:

Belzona 2911 (QD Conditioner)

Belzona 2111 (D&A Hi-Build Elastomer)

Belzona 9341 (Reinforcement Tape)

Problem: Something sharp impacted these fenders hard enough to rip and tear through the 1.5" heavy duty rubber. This would allow water to saturate the foam core which in turn will cause the fender to sink rather than float
Photograph Descriptions

Application Situation
Large foam filled rubber marine fenders used to pillow large ships or barges when they are tied to a dock.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflet SOS-12. First, all loose and damaged areas and pieces were removed. The surface was then prepared with an MBX Bristleblaster to a nice rough "feathery" finish. Belzona 2911 was then applied to the prepped area and then taped off to provide clean lines for the repair. Belzona 2111 was mixed, 500 gr unit at a time, and allowed to cure as per the Instructions For Use. It was then worked into the surface and built up to bring it back to its original form. Finally, each location was overlaid with Belzona 9341 to give the repair some added strength. The tape was removed and the application was smoothed by a Belzona applicator.
Belzona Facts
The replacement cost for each of these marine fenders is over $20,000 USD and in the end, only a couple thousand dollars of materials were used. The other advantage to this repair is the Customer used this application to train two of their crew members in the repair of marine fenders, so next time they will be able to complete the application in their own timeframe for considerably less cost.
