Belzona alters yacht window frames with ease

KHIA ID: 7949
Industry: Marine (MRNE)
Application: GSS-Gaskets, Seals and Shims (GSS)
Substrate: Steel
Customer Location: Mallorca
Application Date: June 2018
Products:

Belzona 1121

Problem: Due to a last minute design change affecting the thickness of the installed glass, the window frames had to be modified. As the structure had already been built, it was not possible to alter the structural design, and therefore an after market alteration had to be made so that the window frames could accommodate the lower thickness windows.

Application Situation
A newly built yacht window installation without 216 linear meters of window frame.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with a modified version of Belzona System Leaflet GSS-9. Belzona 1121 was used to build up the thickness of the window frames by 1 - 1.5 cm. A forming technique was used to ensure precise tolerances. Belzona 9411 (Release Agent) was applied to the formers so that they could be easily removed after the Bezlona 1121 had cured.
Belzona Facts
Belzona 1121 was selected due to it's high build capability, allowing the required thickness to be added to the window frames in a single application. The Belzona material is 100% solids, meaning that it will not distort or shrink whilst curing. This is essential to ensure the correct tolerances can be met. Welding was considered, but rejected as it was deemed the heat stresses could damage and distort the structural steel. Competitor products did not have the slump resistance to achieve the required thickness at one time, meaning the application would have been much more time consuming.
