Belzona Rebuilds And Protects Oil Tank

Industry:

Oil & Gas (OILG)

Application:

Tanks and Chemical Containment Areas (TCC)

Customer Location:

Tunisia

Application Date:

2009

Application Situation:

Crude oil storage tank.

Problem:

Severe pitting was present at the base and lower section of the tank wall, this was a result of a mixture of water and also hydrocarbons found within the crude oil. As the density of the water is greater than the hydrocarbons, the water will sit at the bottom of the tank causing corrosion in this lower section of the tank.

Products:

Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal)

Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade)

Substrate:

Steel

Application Method:

Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona system leaflet TCC-05. Belzona 1121 was used to fill in the pits of the localized damaged areas and plate bonding was used to restore any larger damaged areas on the base of the tank. Once the structure of the tank had been restored, 2 coats of Belzona 5811 were applied to the lower section of the tank.

Belzona Facts:

As this was a rivet tank, welding wasn't allowed as it would have caused the rivets to pop off one after another. The Belzona solution offered a cold applied, safe solution which could be used to restore to the tank.   The tank was also inspected 10 years later and is still in service which showcases the longevity of the Belzona solution.
