Belzona 5871

Problem: Some thin wall and through-wall defects (live leaks) were found on weld joints upon removal of the existing insulation.
Photograph Descriptions
  1. Corroded pipe condition after insulation removal
  2. Surface preparation
  3. Temperature reduction on the pipe after 5871 application
  4. Insulated piping
Application Situation
Non-condensable gas header piping of dimensions 16 inch. OD and 100 ft. length and operating at 208 °F was suffering from corrosion under insulation.
Application Method
Wall thickness readings were taken prior to any work being completed. Belzona 1511 was used to rebuild thin wall defective areas prior to the application of Belzona 5871. Due to non-sparking requirements onsite, the substrate was prepared using MBX bristle blaster and wire brushing.
Belzona Facts
As this piping was to be insulated, the customer was provided with an "all in one" solution (insulation and corrosion resistant barrier). This allowed the customer to use one contractor rather than multiple. Due to the location of the pipe, cool-to-touch properties were not relevant. Nevertheless, the surface temperature was significantly reduced. Overall, Belzona 5871 was a cost-saving solution compared to traditional insulation methods. Belzona 5871 should be able to provide long term corrosion protection and thermal insulation, all in one application!
