Belzona 5871

Belzona 3211 (Lagseal)

Problem: A conventional jacketed insulation system fitted to the external of the aerial dispersant vessel was deemed unfeasible in aerial operation. Therefore, the client’s focus shifted towards barrier coatings which could tightly adhere to the external substrate; provide thermally insulating properties; and protect the external substrate from corrosion down to -25℃. It is important that the dispersant contained in the vessel was kept > 0℃ so it doesn’t freeze up.

3. Three coats of Belzona 5871 completed. Close up of trace heating panel to show the thickness of coating.

4. Vessel coating completed with a Belzona 3211 system applied. Ready to be transported to the client.

Application Situation
A newly fabricated, aerial oil dispersant vessel to be used in cold environments, offshore.
Application Method
Prior to coating the vessel was grit blasted to SA 2.5 with a minimum average profile of 75 microns, followed by the positioning of the trace heating elements. Three coats of Belzona 5871 were then spray applied at a wet film thickness of 1mm per coat. Due to the inherent expanding properties of the Belzona 5871, this amounted to a total DFT of >9mm. Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) incorporating a reinforcing sheet was then applied over the Belzona 5871 to provide additional UV protection and a degree of fire retardant.
Belzona Facts
A coated and trace heated test panel was provided to the end client prior to this novel application, to prove the capabilities of the Belzona materials. The success of the test panel gave the client confidence to go ahead with the full external vessel application.
