Belzona® Seals Tailshaft Liner

Marine (MRNE)

Ships and Offshore Structures (SOS)

Customer Location:

UK Coastal Tanker operator

Application Date:

March 2005

Application Situation:

240mm Tailshaft from a 2500 Tonne Deadweight Coastal Products Tanker, passing through aft peak tank.

The bronze liners had worn and required changing. The body of the tailshaft was coated with a vulcanized rubber lining which was generally intact. Following changing of the Bronze liner the Rubber lining was damaged and not sealing. This could have lead to crevice and bi-metallic corrosion.

Belzona® 1111 (Super Metal)

Belzona® 2911 (Elastomer QD Conditioner)

Belzona® 2941 (Elastomer SP-Conditioner)

Belzona® 2141 (ACR-Fluid Elastomer)

Steel, bronze and rubber

Application Method:

The rubber lining was cut clean away, and roughened using the Belzona Roughing brush. The Bronze liner was tapered to meet the rubber, and left with a rough thread and rebate groove. Following gritblasting of the shaft, Belzona® 1111 was applied between the liner and lining. After Conditioning, Belzona® 2141 was applied to seal between the rubber and the bronze.

Belzona Facts:

Using Belzona allowed the customer to take advantage of sealing between rigid and flexible surfaces and prevented the customer needing to strip the previous rubber lining from the shaft.
