Problem: The column operated with acids, trichloroacetic aldehyde, dichloroethane and trichloroethane at 20-100C and is protected by a graphite fibre reinforced laminate. This lining was additionally protected with acid proof bricks. In the first year of operation it emerged that there was no possibility of sealing the column manhole after opening during routine inspection, and a suitable protective system was needed.

Application Method
Application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet TCC-3. The internal lining was removed in both manhole areas. The first layer of protection used Belzona® 4181 in conjunction with acid resistant tiles. The flange faces were also protected with a lining of Belzona® 4181 composite additionally covered with Belzona® 4341 coating.
Belzona Facts
Application of the Belzona chemical resistant system allowed the column to be protected in its arduous continual service (360days per year). Inspection in June 2008 showed the Belzona to be in perfect condition.
