Belzona® Cold Plate Bonding Reinforces Offshore Deck

Offshore platform had deck areas with 60% metal wall loss



The customer had an integrity inspection performed on their steel decks as part of a life extension program. Several areas on two decks were noted to have thicknesses below the minimal thickness allowed. Some areas had holes which meant a loss of containment if there were an accidental spill.

Application Method:

The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona BEL-CIS-100 Creating Irregular Shims and Method Statement for Cold Plate Bonding. All holes on deck were first repaired, then a perimeter bond was created with Belzona 1121. After Belzona 1121 was allowed to cure, Belzona 5811 was injected by single component airless spray into the dam created between the deck and repair plate.


Belzona Facts:

Belzona was chosen because it was evaluated as safer and more cost effective than conventional deck cutting and plate welding alternatives. Additionally, the Belzona solution is stronger than welding and eliminates the void where corrosion continues.
