BELZONA ENSURES LONG-TERM PROTECTION OF TUGBOAT HULL
Industry: Marine (MRNE)
Application: SOS-Ships and Offshore Structures (SOS)
Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: Marine Division of a Refinery, USA
Application Date: July 2006
Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade)
Problem: Previous hull coating was 80% disbonded after 24 months. Hull plates were so badly pitted and corroded that abrasive blasting blew through in spots. The Refinery wanted a more durable hull coating.

The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet SOS-2. Belzona 5811 was applied via a single-component airless spray.
Belzona has successfully proven to be a high cost-effective solution that has saved the Refinery $168,000 and provided longer longevity than the conventional solvent coating. A 4-year inspection found the majority of the original coating in a perfect condition, still glossy and tightly adherent. During a 7-year inspection, the coating is virtually unchanged from the 4-year inspection with both black and beige coats still present at full thickness. After a 9-year inspection, the application is still perfect and operating.
