BELZONA HELPS PLATFORM QUALIFYING FOR PLUG & ABANDON PROJECT

KHIA ID: 4710
Industry: Oil & Gas (OILG)
Application: VPF-Valves, Pipes and Fittings (VPF)
Substrate: Carbon Steel
Customer Location: Gulf of Mexico
Application Date: July 2012
Products:

Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal)

Belzona 4141 (Magma-Build)

Belzona 9371 (Superwrap Reinforcement Sheet)

Belzona 4151 (Magma-Quartz Resin)

Belzona 9111 (Cleaner Degreaser)

Problem: External/Internal corrosion caused many hole through defects. Conventional welding would have been very time consuming and expensive. Additionally, a hot work repair would have caused shut down of the platform resulting in a great loss of production and income.
Photograph Descriptions
  1. Well conductor showing external corrosion.
  2. Building fillet with Belzona 4141.
  3. Installing Belzona 1121/Belzona 9371/Belzona 4151.
  4. Completed Belzona Composite Wrap.
Application Situation
Offshore operator had six wells that had to be pressure tested to 500 PSI to be qualified for Plug & Abandon (P&A) Program.
Application Method
Repair was conducted in accordance with a modified version of Belzona Know-How System Leaflet VPF-1 and VPF-8. A void between the inner and outer casing was filled with concrete resulting in a sharp transition. The recommendation was to use Belzona 4141 to form a fillet for a better transition from inner and outer casing, thus ensuring a better opportunity for a successful composite wrap. After the Belzona 4141 was installed, a two layer composite wrap was applied using Belzona 1121, and Belzona 9371 wetted out with Belzona 4151.
Belzona Facts
The alternative to a Belzona Composite Wrap solution was welding, which was very labor intensive and would have caused the platform to be shut down and degassed. The welding and loss of production would have been in the hundreds of thousand of dollars to the operator. The Belzona Composite Wrap was installed by a 4 man crew in one 12 hour shift. This included abrasive blasting and installation of the Belzona Composite Wrap.
