BELZONA PROTECTS HYDRAULICS ON WORLDS FIRST TIV

KHIA ID: 8139
Industry: Marine (MRNE)
Application: GSS-Gaskets, Seals and Shims (GSS)
Substrate: Coated Steel
Customer Location: Turbine Installation Vessel, Teesside, UK
Application Date: November 2019
Products:

Belzona 3412

Belzona 8411

Problem: This ship was the world’s first self-elevating Turbine Installation Vessel. The six legs allow the whole ship to be jacked up in water depths of up to 35m whilst placing offshore wind turbines. The hydraulic pipework for the legs is expensive to replace and previously these complex fittings had been protected with a petroleum tape. These tapes were very difficult to remove and had not proved to be effective protection. The client wanted an effective corrosion barrier that would more easily be applied to the complex fittings and would allow easy access for future work.

Application Situation
Hydraulic pipe fittings.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflet GSS-11. The Belzona 8411 was applied to release the areas of the fittings, before coating Belzona 3412 over the area and extending 125mm onto each side of the pipework.
Belzona Facts
Just 2 units of Belzona 3412 was enough to complete the application onto 4 pipe fittings, offering an easy and cost-effective corrosion barrier. Each leg has at least 20 fittings requiring protection, and the applications began in November 2019. If needed, the flexible Belzona 3412 can also be cut and peeled back to allow for future inspections, and is easily reinstated afterwards.
