Photograph Descriptions
  1. Large sprinkler tank with corrosion at water line
  2. Surface being prepared with MBX Bristle Blaster
  3. 36 off 400mm long x 300mm high steel plates being installed using Belzona 1161
  4. Installation of steel plates completed and coated with Belzona 5831
Application Situation
6m diameter x 6m high circular steel panelled tank supplying water 24 hours a day / 7 days a week for the internal fire sprinkler safety system in a large foam product manufacturing plant
Application Method
Application was carried according to Belzona Know How System Leaflet TCC-1. The tank surface to be re-plated was cleaned and abraded using an MBX Bristle Blaster to create a profile. 36 off steel plates each 400mm long x 300mm high x 3mm thick were bonded in place with Belzona 1161 using 4 x countersunk screws per plate to hold them in place. The ends of the new plates were ground to create a "V" where they butted together, and filled with Belzona 1161 after installtion to seal the joints and bond all the plates together. The plates were then coated with Belzona 5831.
Belzona Facts
The sprinkler tank needed to be constantly on line for fire safety and Insurance reasons. Stopping production to remove it and replace it with a new tank was not an option for the customer due to time, space and budget restraints. The Belzona 1161 cold plate bonding method allowed the corroded & split tank to be refurbished to a good condition whilst the tank was still in use. The total Belzona material cost was £3,700, a fraction of the cost to replace the tank. Also the customers water bill was greatly reduced.
