Belzona 1212

Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier)

Problem: On inspection of the tanks, leaks were evident at the seams. Welding was considered for the repairs, however, due to the area being classed as a confined space and the requirement to take the tanks offline, this was not a desirable option.

Application Situation
Transformer oil storage tanks. The client recycles millions of liters of transformer oil every year. As part of the process, they extract the moisture from recycled oil by shutting the tanks off from the atmosphere and connecting the tanks to silica gel tanks to remove the moisture.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet TCC-1. After the initial surface preparation, Belzona 1212 was used to bond pre-manufactured plates onto the damaged areas of the tanks. Once cured, Belzona 5831 was applied to the plated area to provide long term environmental protection. This application was completed on 6 areas where leaks were identified.
Belzona Facts
Welding seemed to be the only option to the customer for the storage tanks. The estimated cost of welding is around £15,000 per tank. This type of repair could have taken weeks to complete limiting capacity and causing big problems trying to stop moisture entering the tanks. The Belzona application was completed over two days without the tanks being taken offline. This ensured moisture ingress would not occur and allowed the plant to continue as normal with no disruption.
