Problem: The customer was looking to do routine maintenance on the vinyl pool liner. When the liner was peeled back, there was heavy corrosion and metal loss on the steel backing plate around the skimmer housing areas. The customer wanted a Belzona solution to restore/repair the metal loss and prevent water from leaking behind the backing plate and skimmer housings.

Application Situation
Corrosion and erosion of steel backing plate around pool skimmers.
Application Method
6" around the plastic skimmer housing was marked to define the repair areas. These areas were bristle blasted to remove loose paint and rust, and to provide a suitable anchor profile. The repair areas were then cleaned with Methyl Ethyl Keytone (MEK) to remove all contaminants. The repair areas were re-taped 3" around the skimmer housings before beginning the metal repair. Belzona 1161 was then brushed into the steel substrate and plastic skimmer housings. Additional Belzona 1161, wetted into Belzona 9341 Reinforcement Tape, was used to re-build the metal loss and bridge the void between the steel backing plate and skimmer housings. Once Belzona 1161 was allowed to cure, Belzona 3121 (MR7) was applied over the entire repair areas, as two coats, preventing any future water ingress.
Belzona Facts
The customer was very familiar with Belzona, and the repair capabilities of the products. The customer chose to use Belzona as a repair solution instead of simply replacing the steel backing plates around the skimmers.
