Belzona Seals Base of a Storage Tank

KHIA ID: 8442
Industry: ()
Application: GSS-Gaskets, Seals and Shims (GSS)
Substrate: Steel, Bitumen, Concrete
Customer Location: Oil terminal, Grangemouth, Scotland
Application Date: November 2020
Products:

Belzona 6111 (Liquid Anode)

Belzona 3131 (WG Membrane)

Belzona 3921 (GSC Conditioner)

Belzona 9431 (Instant Bridging Tape)

Problem: The movement of the tank (during loading & unloading) meant a flexible system capable of coping with this movement was required. Three different substrates (Steel, bitumen & concrete) also needed to be coated seamlessly. Any water penetration could lead to unseen corrosion of the tank base.

Application Situation
A storage tank was in need of a system to prevent water ingress underneath the base. A previous bitumen based system had been used but found to be incapable of providing protection - the lack of flexibility meant it had a short lifespan. A long term solution was required.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflet GSS-03. The base of the tank was grit blasted, Belzona 6111 was then applied for corrosion protection on the steel. Bridging tape & Belzona 3921 were applied to allow the top coat to bond in the correct areas, followed by Belzona 3111 as a two coat system for sealing and weatherproofing.
Belzona Facts
The flexible microporous system effectively sealed the tank annular rim from any external water penetration. It can also cope with the movement of the different substrates, preventing failure from it cracking in service.
