Problem: In the gas suction line condensation of the acids on the internal surface has caused severe corrosion, leading to leaks, which are hazardous to the surrounding environment.

Application Situation

In a Copper production acid plant, pipework in a gas washing process carries acid contaminated gases.

Application Method

Application is carried out using a modified version of Belzona System Leaflet VPF-11. The surface was prepared using mechanical tools and was cleaned with acetone to remove surface contaminants.

Belzona Facts

The damage is localized to a small area on a large section of pipework. Replacing is a costly and work intensive exercise. Weld repairs are likely to lead to the same problem occurring again. Access for heavy welding equipment is also difficult, and hot work is not permitted without special measures being put in place, which are undesirable to the customer. Belzona 4301 has the required chemical resistance to stand up to the 98% sulfuric acid, and can be applied quickly and easily, making it a convenient and effective solution.
