Doubler Plates bonded with Belzona to Forecastle Deck
Industry: Marine (MRNE)
Application: TCC-Tanks and Chemical Containment Areas (TCC)
Substrate: Steel
Customer Location: North Sea, UK
Application Date: November 2008
Products:
Belzona 1151 (Smoothing Metal)
Problem: The width of exposed deck plating has had thickness measurements carried out throughout its life and has shown signs of thinning. They needed to replace the lost metal and reintroduce the corrosion allowance, as the guttering is classed as part of the green deck (structural integrity of the deck), welding would require the area to be heat treated post welding to relieve any stress created by the welding.

Application Situation
The vessel which was built in 1962 has a thick wooden decking covering the majority of the area with a 12” section of the deck plating exposed to act as a gutter way for directing sea water that comes onto the deck towards mid ships and scuppers.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflet TCC-3. The doubler plates have been prepared to a minimum of 5mm thick plate which are 1300mm in length and 350mm width. The Belzona 1151 (Smoothing Metal) was applied to the plate, and the corresponding area of the deck. The plate was gently bonded on to the deck until all of the excess Belzona 1151 has been exuded out from around the full circumference of the plate.
Belzona Facts
The Belzona 1151 was a cold repair, no pre or post heat treatment required. Plates were in 100% contact with the deck, welding was only circumferential. No specialist equipment required, giving a quicker turnaround.
