Application Situation
Roof top of an oil storage tank in a port authority facility.
Application Method
Plates could not be welded to the remaining substrate. Cold plate bonding technique was chosen to cover roof top holed areas. The Customer's contractor removed large thinned sections of the roof top and prepped the remaining substrate by a hand-held grinder. New steel plates had been pre-cut and abrasive blasted to a near white metal finish with a 3 mill angular profile. Belzona 1161 was mixed - the roof top surface had been wetted out with a small 2" cut chip brush. At the same time the remaining mixed material was applied to the bottom of the new steel plates creating a build-up in the center of the plates to allow Belzona 1161 to spread out evenly filling all the voids.
Belzona Facts
Provided the scale of the damage and inability to use welding, Belzona cold plate bonding was the only solution possible. Belzona 1161 was selected due to its surface-tolerant abilities as using abrasive blasting to the tank's rood was not an option. The application was completed with zero hot work thus making it a safe application for the Contractors and facility.
