BELZONA REPAIRS AND PROTECTS LEAKING TRANSFORMER TURRETS
Industry: Power (POWR)
Application: TCC-Tanks and Chemical Containment Areas (TCC)
Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: National Grid, Scotland, UK
Application Date: October 2015
Products:
Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal)
Belzona 5831 (ST Barrier)
Problem: The corrosion had led to a loss of wall thickness. Some of these thinned areas had begun to leak. Loss of oil from the transformer represented a safety & environmental hazard. A fast, long term repair was required to fix the problem. No hot works are allowed due to the presence of oil.
Photograph Descriptions
1. Turrets before work commenced 2. Close up of the corrosion on the turrets 3. Plates bonded in place with Belzona 1161 4. Belzona 5831 applied to provide long term corrosion protection
Application Situation
Transformer turrets are normally sealed from the weather into the roof above the transformer. Rainwater had leaked in between the roof & the turret allowing corrosion to take place.
Application Method
Application was carried out in accordance with modified versions of Belzona System Leaflets TCC-1 and TCC-5. The corrosion was removed & a surface profile created with MBX Bristle Blaster. Belzona 1161 was then used to bond doubler plates to the surface. These plates were fabricated so that two sections fitted around the circumference of the turret. The repaired areas were then over coated with Belzona 5831 for further corrosion resistance.
Belzona Facts
These repairs were possible during a week shutdown. The alternatives would have involved shutdowns to weld or complete replacement of the turrets.
