Problem: Several WTG (Wind Turbine Generator) blades had suffered damage from bird strikes, lightning strikes, and erosion from the rain. The damaged blades could cause rotor imbalance and more severe problems, so the affected WTG units were shut down.

Application Situation
Damaged wind turbine blades at a wind farm 110 Miles Northeast of Bangkok. The wind farm is owned and operated by one of Thailand’s leading energy providers. The client contacted the Belzona distributor in Thailand for a repair and protection solution for the damaged blades.Application Method
Before travelling to the project site, the application team completed a one-day course on how to repair wind turbine blades using Belzona 5711/5721 at the Belzona Training Facility in Thailand. Onsite, a three-person team, two applicators using rope access, and one spotter on the ground carried out the application. Each damaged blade was cleaned using water and a degreaser, and the affected area was identified and marked. The damaged surfaces were sanded down with 80 grit sandpaper, and Belzona 5711 was applied with an applicator and rubber strap to repair the physical damage on the blades. After the Belzona 5711 product had cured, the area was sanded once again to provide a smooth finish; masking tape was then used to mark out the areas for coating. Belzona 5721 was then applied within the Belzona 5711 overcoating window to the affected areas with a brush. After completing the applications, the masking tape was removed, and the WTG unit was ready to return to service.The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona System Leaflet FBC -16.
