Belzona 7311 Restores Thickness to Storage Tank

Problem: Severe corrosion on a brine storage tank was causing critical loss to the thickness. These tanks operate at a temperature range of 5°C to 40°C, and the customer required a cold bonding solution restore the holes and thickness in the tank. As you can see from the photographs the damage was quite serious in certain areas of the tank.

Application Situation
The Belzona solution was chosen because hot welding was impossible (the walls were too thin) and therefore the Belzona solution was the perfect cold applied alternative. This petrochemical site had been a loyal customer for more than 10 years, therefore they were open to a Belzona solution due to success with many previous applications.
Application Method
Initial surface preparation was first carried out using a wire brushing due to sandblasting and grinding being prohibited. First, 4mm thick plates were cold bonded using Belzona 1161. On the thinner walls, Belzona 7311 was used to bond 2mm thick plates, this was because the thinner walls were much more susceptible to twisting and flexing.

The work was completed in 4 hours and there is further work to be carried out to reinforce more of their tanks.
