Application Situation
The pockets located behind the chipper knives wears back over time. This creates irregular wood chips, which in turn lowers the quality of the chips that the paper mills purchase. Applying Belzona 1811 to protect against the wear lengthens the life of the blade and allows the mill to produce consistent high quality wood chips.
Application Method
The application surface was prepped by grit blasting, solvent washed, and the Belzona 1811 was applied using the mixing knife, applicator, and by hand. Once the material was firm enough, the surface was smoothed down by hand using soapy water, creating a fine smooth finish.
Belzona Facts
Belzona 1811 is perfect for repairing and extending the life of a chipper disk. It protects the steel, but also due to the carbide chips in the material, as the chips pass through, the wood leaves behind a layer of wood fiber on the exposed ceramic ships. This creates a bed of wood fiber to further protect the pocket, and further extend the life of the chipper disk, all while producing consistently dependable wood chips that the pulp mill will pay more for as it makes for better paper products. This application also reduces the amount of wood chip jams in the chipper disk, which means less unnecessary shutdowns.
Regular inspections showed minimal wear of the Belzona 1811, much less than the original steel had, and did not require any further attention for 4 years. At that time, as a preventative measure, some additional Belzona 1811 was added to the original material applied in 2015.
