Problem: SF6 leaks were detected from a flange in the power industry. Sf6 leaks are one of the most potent greenhouse gases, approximately 36,000 times more polluting than co2. Consequently leaks are heavily monitored, and there is requirement to seal the leaks, quickly and effectively. Belzona UK Ltd were invited to seal a large and technically challenging flange on horizontal end plate.
End plate with steel girder resting on top creates difficult geometry to execute repair
Hand tools are used to clean the area and create a minimum surface profile for application
First stages of Sf6 solution
Completed application of bespoke sf6 solution
Application Situation
As the area was outdoors, the area had to be properly arranged, including waterproofing for the solution to be fully effective. The geometry of the flanges made the application extremely difficult, which meant that an innovative bespoke sf6 fix solution had to be created to effectively seal the leak.
Application Method
The area between the flange faces will remain undisturbed, with surface preparation limited to the landing areas on either side of the gasket/neck. Surface preparation will be carried out using 110v power tools, including grinders fitted with flap wheels and specialist rotating wire wheels. The prepared surface will form a 150mm-wide band around the full circumference of the equipment. The full Belzona® SF₆ Repair System will be applied during a single work shift. Following application, the repair will be left to cure overnight, with a breather pipe installed and left open to allow off-gassing during the mechanical cure process. On the following day, a full inspection will be conducted
Belzona Facts
The Belzona solution offers a massive cost saving as alternative methods would have been to remove high beam to take cover off and replace gasket, which would mean a lot more labour and longer down time. The solution also offers weather protection to stop any further weather damage.
