Problem: A new section of aqueduct was constructed to replace an old section that dated back to Roman times. The welded joints needed protection after being buried underground. Belzona proposed a solution that met the client's requirements. Initial tests carried out by BS SRL and Belzona Ltd showed that the coating had sufficient peel adhesion to HDPE and satisfied the client's needs.
Post welding, pre-application.
Applied Belzona 5815 being inspected with a thickness gauge.
Application Situation
The client needed a solution for buried pipelines that would protect the welded joints from corrosion while remaining flexible enough to accommodate small pipeline movements. The coating had to comply with EN10290 standards, which Belzona 5815 met. Test results showed a small improvement in adhesion when Belzona 2911 was used as a primer to improve the bond between the plastic surface and the epoxy coating.
Application Method
The pipes were lined with HDPE, which was removed on-site after the welding work was completed at each joint. The welded areas were then prepared using an MBX bristle blaster. After surface preparation, Belzona 2911 and Belzona 5815 were applied by hand using brushes.
Belzona Facts
Belzona 5815 was chosen for it's flexibility, being able to withstand impacts, and flex with pressure differential within the pipe line.
