Belzona Protects Sulfuric Acid Tank in a Chemical Plant
Industry: Chemical & Petrochemical (PETR)
Application: TCC-Tanks and Chemical Containment Areas (TCC)
Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: Alabama, USA
Application Date: April 2022
Products: Belzona 4311 (Magma CR1), Belzona 4911 (Magma TX Conditioner), Belzona 7311
Problem: The Client needed a new base coating for their metal sulfuric acid tank. They also needed a solution to bond pipe supports to the top of a metal sulfuric acid tank. However, the tank was lined with rubber which ruled out any hot work or welding. This meant that a cold bonding solution was needed.
Previous coating was removed.
Belzona 4311 applied to provide excellent chemical resistance to the tank base.
Areas on top of the tank prepared with a Bristle Blaster to remove paint.
Belzona 7311 to bond pipe supports to the top of the tank.
Application Situation
Protection for a new base and bonding pipe supports to the top of a metal sulfuric acid tank.
Application Method
The tank base was ground, and the previous coating was removed, before Belzona 4911 was used to condition the substrate. Two coats of Belzona 4311 (Magma CR1) were then applied to provide excellent chemical resistance to the tank base. The areas on top of the tank were prepared with a Bristle Blaster to remove paint and to achieve surface roughness to allow pipe supports to be bonded to the top of the tank using Belzona 7311. In total, six 10 inch by 10 inch bottom plates were bonded to tank, initially without additional weight or pressure while the product cured.
Belzona Facts
Belzona 4311 provided the tank with long-term protection against chemical attack while Belzona 7311 provided an excellent cold bonding solution with no possibility of hot work. The Client was very pleased with the project and was particularly impressed by the strength of Belzona 7311.
