Belzona Repairs and Protects Wind Turbine Columns

Problem: Damage on the surface of the columns caused by salt deposits from rain and fog settlements. Elements create corrosive areas on equipment and metallic columns are no exception. The Customer felt if the issue was not addressed in due time, through-wall defects could lead to a loss of structural integrity, which could pose a bigger issue long-term.

Application Situation
Wind turbine columns.
Application Method
Customer needed a solution requiring minimal effort from labor. Access was only by wire rope and staging basket. Abrasive media blasting was not allowed. An MBX Bristle Blaster was used to acquire a surface profile of 3 mils. MEK was used to clean and degrease the application area. Then one high-build coat of Belzona 1331 was applied by brush in one staging. The application was carried out in accordance with a modified version of Belzona System Leaflet CEP-4 and Belzona 1331 Instructions for Use.
Belzona Facts
Belzona 1331 offers outstanding erosion-corrosion resistance. In addition, because of its chemical resistant qualities, the salt environment along the coast proves no match for this coating. Being a high-build coating, this application was carried out in one single pass, thus keeping labor and downtime to a minimum.
