Problem: Water was accumulating on the church floor, which appeared to be emanating from under the floor itself. The floor was lifted and a large hole was identified in the cast iron mains water pipe.
The pipes under the floor, now isolated and the water removed. The leak was still weeping
The throughwall was identified as a large hole in the side of the main 4" pipe
As a best effort, the pipe was repaired with an oversized pre-made shell, Belzona 1212 and tie wraps
With the job completed, the floor boards and pews were returned to position
Application Situation
Belzona were asked if there was a possible solution, by the verger of the church, who happened to be an engineering manager for his day job. He had used Belzona at work and was confident that a solution could be reached
Application Method
Every effort was made to clean off dust, rust, flaking material and water. No power tools could be used and Grit Blasting wasn't an option.
The area was cleaned and degreased using Belzona 9111
The Belzona Engineer asked for an oversized shell to be provided, which was prepared by cross hatching with a grinder
The Belzona 1212 was mixed and wetted out the pipe target area
The shell was built up with Belzona 1212 and applied over the hole, securing with tie wraps
Belzona Facts
The only alternatives were either welding or pipe replacement. Neither of these were either practical nor cost effective.
On calling the Verger about this some 4+ years later, there has been no issues with the pipe leaking and no further damage to the church, fittings and furniture
