Belzona seals leak in Wind Turbine Tower

Problem: A crack along a weld seam had lead to an oil leak from a bund which is used to contain lubricant oil used for the bearings and gearbox. Loss of containment can cause damage to surrounding equipment and a hazard to personnel climbing the tower.

Application Situation

Inside the tower of a wind turbine, close to the nacelle area around 100 meters above ground.

Application Method

The application was carried out in accordance with a modified version of Belzone Know-How System Leaflet TCC-1. The surface was thoroughly cleaned, the crack was terminated by drilling holed on each end. The surface was then abraded by mechanical tools before the leak was plugged using Belzona 9611. Once the Belzona 9611 has cured, Belzona 1212 with Belzona 9341 (Reinforcement Sheet) was used to ensure a long lasting repair.

Belzona Facts

Due to the limited space within the application area and difficult access welding could not be carried out. Additionally hot work was undesirable as it could lead to further damage to the substrate. Belzona was chosen due to the cold applied solution that can be used to stop the leak live, in-situ, without the need for specialist tools or equipment.
