Kingspan Joint sealing

KHIA ID: 9476
Industry: Food & Drink (FOOD)
Application: RPA-Roof Problem Areas (RPA)
Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: Thorne
Application Date: May 2024
Products: Belzona 2211 (MP Hi-Build Elastomer),Belzona 2911 (Elastomer QD Conditioner),Belzona 9111 (Cleaner Degreaser)

Problem: Condensation from local chillers were forming puddles and a build up of standing water over the Kingspan roof sheets of a large chiller room. The water would stand, then penetrate the joints, leaking into the chiller itself, where moving aerial conveyor hooks transported the food product below. The joints needed to be sealed so a trial was sought

Application Situation
The Belzona 2211 was offered as a flexible, high build solution to eradicate the issue of standing water getting onto processed raw meat. The application was also an ideal vehicle for the Senior Sales Engineer to offer full training for the application of the product, which the company have now started to roll out
Application Method
Access was gained to the roof space above the chiller
The target area was prepared by grinding in a cross hatch pattern to gain best effort preparation to the steel kingspan sheets
The area was degreased and cleaned using Belzona 9111
Masking tape was used to gain clean lines on the finished application
A thin coat of 2911 was applied and allowed to cure to touch dry.
Belzona 2211 was mixed and the Kingspan joint was wetted out, as was the Belzona 9431 reinforcing sheet which was applied over the wetted out Kingspan
Belzona 2211 was applied using a Belzona applicator to complete the works
The masking was removed immediately
Belzona Facts
Other alternatives had been tried in the past, such as mastics and silicone sealants. These all failed within a few days or weeks. The engineers on site needed a more robust solution that they could apply using their own team.
