Surface Tolerant Deck Repair with Belzona

Problem: Due to misalignment of the scupper drain, salt water had ponded in the corner of a storage locker and caused localized pitting and penetrations in the deck. This was causing water to leak through the deck and into the ship. Left unchecked this leak would have caused thousands of dollars of damage and allowed water through to the lower decks which could have affected normal operations and was an unacceptable hazard for the client.

Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) was used to reclaim pitting and holes in the deck, then applied in a thicker layer to raise the height of the deck to ensure good drainage in future.

3 weeks after completion the area is draining as intended and the risk of further corrosion has been greatly reduced.

Application Situation
Blast cleaning was not an option at this location, and this area frequently floods during bad weather. Conventional methods such as cutting out the deck and welding in new sections were estimated to take over a week and required the whole area and lower decks to be sectioned off for safety. This would greatly affect normal ship operations and cost thousands of dollars. The Belzona solution was completed in less than 8 hours with minimal noise or interruption.
Application Method
Surface preparation was carried out with flap discs and an MBX to ensure cleanliness and profile in-line with the SP11 Specification. The holes were patched with Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) with incorporated Belzona 9341 reinforcement tape. The whole repair area was then wet-out with Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) and built up until proud of the drain. Once cured, sanding made the repaired area smooth and ready for painting. 
Belzona Facts
The costs involved in cutting out, removing and replacing substantial portions of deck are prohibitive, and only address a systematic issue. Time is also a problematic factor as conventional repairs require many days of skilled labour. Belzona solutions such as this allow the asset owner to not only address the root causes of asset degradation but to do so quickly, safely and without the need for specialised tools and knowledge.
