Belzona Coating Protects Hopper Interior from Wear

KHIA ID: 9504
Industry: Food & Drink (FOOD)
Application: SHM-Solids Handling Machinery (SHM)
Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: Melbourne, Australia
Application Date: July 2024
Products: Belzona 5821

Problem: Hoppers experiencing wear during the processing of the product.

Hopper was approximately 2 storeys high.

Tapered bottom end making bottom access difficult.

Access hatch from the top of the hopper allowing for one man entry.

Platforms set up internally for applicators to stand on during the application process.

Application Situation
With the cost of each hopper equating to approximately AUD 100,000 each as well as the logistical difficulties and additional costs associated with this, an alternative solution using the Belzona technology was proposed. The total cost of removing and replacing the hoppers would exceed AUD 300,000, whereas the cost of the Belzona application was AUD 90,000.
Application Method
The application was carried out in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet SHM-13.
With clear access to all open sections of the hoppers, internal platforms were set up and ducting placed for all dust extraction from abrasive blasting to be carried out safely. Once this was done and ducting removed, the Belzona 5821 was spray applied in two separate coats achieving a total of 500 micron film thickness and allowed to cure for a full 5 days.
Belzona Facts
A total of approximately AUD 200,000 was saved opting for a Belzona protective coating instead of replacing the hoppers in the near future. Belzona 5821 would provide sufficient protection and substantial life extension of the hoppers.

After several successful applications on site from the company using Belzona as well as various case studies proving the effectiveness of the product range, the customer was very happy to go ahead with this application.
