Chipper disks repaired with Belzona 1811
Industry: Pulp & Paper (PLPR)
Application: SHM-Solids Handling Machinery (SHM)
Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: Priest River Idaho
Application Date: November 2016
Products: Belzona 1811 (Ceramic Carbide)
Problem: Heavily worn chipper disk pockets.
Pockets grit blasted and being washed with solvent.
Applying the Belzona 1811.
Belzona 1811 applied with some mixing board pieces taped in place to help with the profile.
Application Situation
This chipper disk had heavy wear in the pockets which would result in poor quality chips that are worth less to the pulp mill. The only two alternatives are replacement and welding. Replacement is too expensive especially with only a couple years of use, and welding is known to cause heat stress which then requires the disk to be removed and shipped out for heat stress relief, all resulting in greater expenses and much longer downtimes.
Application Method
Grit blasting to remove all contaminants, washing thoroughly with solvents, and applying Belzona 1811 by hand, firmly pushing it into place.
Belzona Facts
Replacing a disk like this is only done as a last option. Being able to repair these pockets and extend the use of this disk by double without having to disassemble it results in a huge saving of time and money. Based on those facts, this application almost pays for itself immediately. Another great fact is this application can be done in-house further saving time and money without the need to schedule and wait for a specialist to come in and do it for them.
This disk was inspected 3 years later and showed very little sign of wear, putting it on target to out perform the disk in its original condition from new.
