Creating Irregular Shim for Tracked Skidder Axle

KHIA ID: 9589
Industry: Other (OTHER)
Application: GSS-Gaskets, Seals and Shims (GSS)
Substrate: Carbon steel
Customer Location: British Columbia, Canada
Application Date: July 2021
Products: Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)

Problem: A tracked skidder used in forestry had sustained damage which distorted the frame, causing one track drive to be slightly out of alignment even after the frame had been straightened,

The final drive housing seat is not damaged, but it is out of alignment due to frame distortion. The mating surface will be cleaned and prepped with a mechanical blaster and all bolt holes corked, then Belzona 1111 will be applied over it.

A final drive housing with the mating flange coated with release agent is used as a former to create a new, properly aligned seat.

The drive housing is installed immediately after the Belzona 1111 is applied, and aligned while the product is still soft, Excess material is exuded, and it is allowed to cure.

When the drive housing is removed, the new, properly aligned seat is revealed.

Application Situation
Belzona offered a relatively fast and considerably less expensive option of properly aligning the final drive housing; the alternative was to strip the frame completely and attempt to re-straighten the frame, which would have taken several days and may or may not have been successful.
Application Method
No special tools were used, aside from a Bristle Blaster for surface preparation.
Belzona Facts
This was the only real option for the customer other than a complete rebuild.
