Problem: Corrosion had caused perforation on a cooling water pipe in a petrochemical site that produces ammonium nitrate fertilizers had caused the pipe to leak severely. This pipe was operating in the nitric acid area and therefore the corrosion was very intense. The Client needed a quick and repair method that could be carried out within a very short shutdown period but also provided a long-term solution.

Application Situation
This petrochemical site which produces ammonium nitrate fertilizers required a quick solution for their pipe which was suffering from several leaks caused by corrosion. The work was required to be carried out quickly during their short production shutdown period. We had previously repaired an pipe elbow for this client by bonding a plate, the Client was very happy with this previous repair and enquired as to whether we could do something similar.
Application Method
The surface was prepared by using sandblasting and the perforation was sealed using Belzona 9611. The damaged areas next to the perforation were then repaired using Belzona 1212, then the curved plate was bonded using 24 unites of Belzona 7311 with straps for tightening. Finally, a layer of Belzona 5811 was applied to provide protection from future damage as the corrosion was very intense.

The Client was very happy with the final application as it required no hotwork and was able to be carried out within their very short shutdown period.
