Tank Protection at an Oil Terminal with Belzona

KHIA ID: 9792
Industry: Oil & Gas (OILG)
Application: TCC-Tanks and Chemical Containment Areas (TCC)
Substrate: Concrete
Customer Location: 555 FL Hwy 401 Cape Canaveral
Application Date: March 2025
Products: Belzona 3111 (Flexible Membrane),Belzona 3921 (GSC Surface Conditioner)

Problem: The customer was experiencing water ingress underneath the base of an 87-foot tank. This constant exposure to moisture posed a risk of corrosion and potential long-term structural deterioration. A solution was needed to seal the area and protect the asset from further damage due to environmental conditions.

Tank T-50-3 at a biodiesel terminal. Water ingress was identified around the tank base, causing localized corrosion and posing a risk to structural integrity.

During the initial inspection, rust was observed at the junction between the tank ring and the concrete base — a clear indicator of moisture infiltration.

Belzona sealing system being applied. The first layer of Belzona 3111 is reinforced to ensure both mechanical strength and flexibility.

Completed coating with Belzona 3111, forming a seamless and durable barrier against water ingress. An effective and aesthetic protection to extend the asset's service life.

Application Situation
The Belzona system provided major time and cost savings by avoiding the need for disassembly or tank lifting. Unlike traditional methods, it allowed for cold-applied, in-situ repair with no shutdown or hot work required. The application was completed in under 2 days with minimal disruption and long-term protection.
Application Method
The application began with sandblasting to remove corrosion and contaminants, creating the ideal surface profile. Belzona 3921 was applied as a conditioner, followed by a first layer of Belzona 3111, reinforced with Belzona 9311 sheet. A second layer of 3111 sealed the system.

Tools used: sandblasting equipment, brushes, rollers, scissors, and standard PPE.

The repair was completed in situ under ambient conditions, with no hot work or shutdown required.
Belzona Facts
Traditional methods like tank base replacement or lifting involved high costs, safety risks, and long downtime. Belzona’s cold-applied, in-situ system eliminated the need for shutdowns, hot work, or heavy equipment—saving time and money.

Belzona 3111 offers long-term protection against water ingress and corrosion. Its proven performance and easy application made it the most practical and cost-effective solution for this project.
